Our Veterinary Technicians are the Heartbeat of our Practice. |

|
Please stop in during the week of October 10th to see our tech's in action. We think they are the best western South Dakota—you will too! |
 |
At Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital our technicians are the heartbeat of our practice. All of our technicians have graduated from a veterinary technician college program.
Under the direction of our doctors, the tech's vaccinate, prep for surgery, assist in surgery, perform dental cleanings, prepare tissue samples for lab analysis, draw blood for screenings, collect urine and fecal samples and evaluate those samples, monitor patients after surgery, order and track inventory, and most important—give out unlimited hugs to our patients.
Our doctors are highly educated professionals, but without the skills of our technicians, the doctors would not be able to provide the level of care to your pets that Canyon Lake Veterinary clients have come to expect. |
Debbie Cooper is responsible for ordering and maintaining the inventory at the hospital. She’s the one that makes sure that we have the supplies we need for surgery, the food your pet needs and everything else we use in our hospital. Debbie also fills in at the reception desk.

Greta Maker is assisting Dr Serena Heig in creating a treatment plan for a patient that is in an exam room. The doctors recommend the medical plans to the owners for each patient. When the owners agree to that plan, the tech's then administer the medicines, vaccinations, prepare prescriptions to go home and educate the owners about the care the doctors have determined to be the best plan for each patient. |

Tami Bremer and Mickie Hortness are collecting a blood sample from a pet before surgery.
Our tech's always work as a team—people will hold still for a blood draw, but drawing blood from a scared kitty is definitely a two person job! |

Here Tami Bremer is examining a sample under the microscope.
The tech's are experienced in making initial assessments of “what’s on the slide”.
They then give their results to the doctors.
The doctors confirm what the tech's found and base the treatment plan for the patient on what the sample contains (or doesn’t contain). |

Mickie Hortness and Greta Maker are prepping a patient for surgery.
The tech's are responsible for shaving the patients; administering the drugs the doctors want the patients to have before surgery; escorting the patients into the surgical suite and monitoring the vital signs of the patients during surgery.
They also stay with the patients after surgery until they are awake. |

Dr. Serena Heig is monitoring Greta Maker and Mickie Hortness as they perform lab work for a patient that is going to have surgery.
All clients are encouraged to have blood work done on their pets before surgery to make sure that the liver and kidney functions are optimal and that the patient will tolerate the anesthesia that is used. |
