Serena C. Heig, DVM

Dr. Heig is a South Dakota native who grew up on her family’s ranch near Prairie City, SD.
She received her undergraduate degree in Animal Science from South Dakota State University. From there, she attended Iowa State University – College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames, Iowa. After graduating in 2003, Dr. Heig began her career in the suburbs of Chicago as an equine practitioner. She then worked for a mixed animal clinic in Pipestone, MN/Flandreau, SD before settling down closer to home in the Black Hills. |

She purchased and was blessed to become part of the Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital team in August of 2007. She enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine with a special interest in soft tissue surgery, ultrasonography and physical rehabilitation.
Dr. Heig and her husband Nick have two children, Elli and Hayden. Their furry family members consist of two cats (GB and BG) and one dog (Bogey). When she is not at work, Dr. Heig loves to spend precious time with her family and some of her hobbies include working with horses, being outdoors, skiing, golfing, photography, drawing, and reading.

James D. Mortimer, DVM

Dr. Mortimer attended University of Minnesota where he received his bachelor degree. After graduating from University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, in 1964 he served as a US Army Veterinarian. He then had a house-call practice in New York City. Next, he served at a large veterinary hospital in New Jersey. He later moved to Northern California and with his partner, built the Broadway Animal Hospital. In 1974, he established the Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital in Rapid City where he still enjoys working today. Dr. Mortimer enjoys fly-fishing, hiking, gardening and reading.

Amy Goodrich, DVM

Dr. Goodrich attended Chadron State College in 1989 where she received her bachelor degree. After graduating from veterinary school at Kansas State University in 1993, Dr. Goodrich spent a year in a mixed animal practice in the Black Hills area. Now she practices small animal medicine and surgery with Dr. Mortimer at Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital. Special interests at the hospital include small animal internal medicine. When not at the hospital, she enjoys time off at her Nebraska ranch chasing cows with her dogs.

Mickie Hortness

Mickie was born in the great state of South Dakota. At 4 years old her family moved to California for the next 8 years. Feeling that South Dakota was a better place to raise children, the family returned to South Dakota when Mickie was 12 years old. Since childhood, books and animals have always been her two great loves. After college graduation Mickie went to work for a major bookstore chain & for the next 12 years she was surrounded by thousands of wonderful books on a daily basis. Mickie also enjoys kayaking and has discovered that archery is fun. But she only does target practice!She enjoys books, movies, music, gardening, baking and the thrill of releasing a creature back to the wild. |

How lucky could a person be! After 12 years in the retail business Mickie felt the need for a change. But it didn’t make sense to give up one great love unless it was to work in some capacity with her other great love – animals. Mickie returned to school and graduated from the Veterinary Technology program at National American University in 1998. She has been employed at Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital since 1996. Through her years at Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital her career has evolved and she has found a niche in the field of wildlife rehabilitation. Mickie manages the wildlife rehabilitation program for the hospital.
Pets: She and her husband, Larry, share their home with one dog, 14 cats, two rabbits, two ducks, 6 doves, 3 aquariums and various orphaned or injured wild birds and small mammals. |

Tami Bremer

Before moving to Rapid City in 1997, Tami lived in a variety of places, including Aberdeen, SD, Colorado Springs, CO, Miles City, MT, and Minneapolis, MN. Her first career after graduating from high school was as a hair designer. She attended Stewarts School of Hair Design and worked for the Stewarts Company. After moving to Rapid City, Tami decided to pursue a career that involved her love for animals. She attended National American University and received an AAS degree in Veterinary Technology in 2000. |

Tami was very fortunate to be able to start working at Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital while attending NAU and to become a full-time technician upon graduation. She has a special fondness for working with owners and pets to resolve behavior related issues. As a senior staff member, she brings years of experience to the CLVH team.
Tami enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter who was born in July of 2005. She has been an amazing new addition to her life. She spends her free time reading, fishing, scrap booking, and going on adventures with her family. Tami enjoys reading, fishing, information technology, swimming and biking.

Debbie Cooper

Debbie was born in Germany. Her mother is from Germany and her dad was in the military. After he retired, the family moved to Rapid City where she grew up and graduated from Stevens High School. Debbie worked for years in the retail business. She decided to do something more fulfilling after a total hip replacement in 2000. Because of her love of animals she decided to go to school at National American University to become a veterinary technician where she graduated with an AAS in 2004. Debbie supervises inventory management for the hospital.
Debbie cares for her elderly mother. She plays in the local pool league, volunteers at the YMCA, enjoys working in her garden and helping her boyfriend remodel and decorate their home.

Debbie is preparing some paperwork at the end of the day. In addition to assisting at the front desk, Debbie makes sure that the hospital inventory is well managed. This is a challenging task and allows the hospital to function at its' best by making sure that everything we need to care for our patients is in place. |

Anouska Willett

Anouska was born in England and came over to the US as a baby. Her father was US military and so traveling around the country became normal for her and her sisters. Rapid City, SD, was one of the many places along the way, but made a huge impact on her so now she resides here permanently. She attended National American University and graduated in May of 2006. She trained at Canyon Lake while attending school and then went on to gain experience at a local mixed animal practice. She is now back at Canyon Lake and has a special interest in critical care and exotics. Anouska has an awesome family and loves spending time with them on her days off. She also loves working on home improvement, taking the boat out during the summer, enjoys scrapbooking, party planning and gardening also. Anouska has developed a turtle habitat in her backyard and enjoys caring for the injured turtles that come to the wildlife rehab program at the hospital.
Anouska ( right) is preparing to read the results of a heartworm test. Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital promotes diagnostic testing to ensure the most effective treatment plans for all patients and their owners. A negative heartworm test is great news for this pet!
Pets: She has two dogs, Mickey and Fiona, two cats, Roadie and Eragon, a bearded dragon, Princess Diana, a leopard gecko and various turtles. |

Madonna Goodart

Madonna was born and raised in Rapid City. She graduated form St. Martin’s Academy and attended college at SDSU and SDSM&T. Madonna married her best friend, Dan, in 1974. During 32 years of marriage Dan and Madonna have raised 4 children: Jessica, Nicholas, Aaron and Adam. They also were long-term foster parents for Anne. Madonna has been manning the reception desk at Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital since 2003 and thoroughly enjoys the challenges of making the hospital run smoothly, meeting clients and getting to know their pets. Madonna multi-tasking (right), handles the appointment calendar,does community outreach for the hospital and is the voice on the other end of the phone when clients call. |

Madonna and her standard poodle (top left), Rhett. Rhett was a re-homed pet--Madonna got him from a client that felt he would be happier with Madonna. She spent almost 2 years preparing Rhett and herself for the evaluation by the Delta Society that allows them to visit nursing homes, schools and other places. Rhett's gentle temperament garnered him the highest score the Delta Society gives--meaning the he is reliable in all situations.
When not at work, Madonna enjoys caring for her heirloom rose collection and circa 1929 home, reading, knitting and watching the Koi in her husband’s backyard pond. Madonna obtained registration as a Pet Partner Therapy Team from the Delta Society © with her standard poodle, Rhett. They are frequent visitors at a local nursing home and at Black Hills Workshop. Madonna enjoys kayaking with her dog, Maven and hiking throughout the Black Hills. Pets: Madonna has 5 dogs, several cats and 2 bunnies. One of which is Rhett (standard poodle). |

Greta Maker

Greta Maker is a North Dakota girl who graduated from National American University in 2007. She did her externship here at Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital and was hired shortly thereafter. Greta has a special interest in pocket pets and is gifted in the area of information technology. She has lived Rapid City for 5 years and in her free time she enjoys camping, fishing and kayaking. You may be able to find Greta in the crowd at the Civic Center during the Rush hockey games, as she is a big fan! |
