Exotic Avians Exotic birds can be amazing pets for anyone to own. They are intelligent, vocal, and have remarkable colors that appeal to many people. Most of the health problems encountered in pet birds are due to insufficient husbandry practices. This makes it of the utmost importance to properly care for these birds. Each species will have specific requirements and it is important that these needs are met. There is an endless supply of information available about caring for these pets but consulting with your veterinarian is important as well. Not only is it a good idea to bring your bird in for an exam when they are sick, but also an exam when they are healthy helps your veterinarian establish a familiarity with your particular pet. Budgies and Cockatiels have an average life span ranging from 5 to 7 years all the way to as old as 18 years if properly cared for. Cockatoos, African gray parrots, macaws, and Amazon parrots can live even longer, ranging from 40, 50, 50 and 80 years respectively. Owning these types of pets is a decision that should not be made lightly. Some of the pets have the potential, if properly cared for, to outlive their owner. It is very vital that they be kept in sanitary conditions, fed an adequate diet, and conditioned to life in a cage as to not develop behavior problems. |
